Event Information Sheet
The Broughton Junior Hill Races will take place in the Broughton Height Hills near Biggar in the Scottish Borders on Saturday 11th May 2024. The hills are known as a great venue for hill running, and have hosted events in recent years such and the British Relay and Inter Counties Championships.
Important Note – It is the lambing season so all dogs MUST be kept on a lead.
Race Details
There are three races which will take place on up and down courses, starting and finishing at the foot of the Broughton Hope valley near the Shepherd’s Cottage (Grid Ref 120374). The schedule for the races is:
12.00pm: Junior Fun Run (focused on Under 11 runners (born after 2013), but open to all): 1 to 1.5km (course tbc)
12.30pm: Combined Under 13 (born 2012/13) & Under 15 (born 2010/11) Race: 2.9km, 130m ascent/descent
1.00pm: Combined Under 17 (born 2008/09) & Under 20 (born 2005/06/07) Race: 5.0km, 240m ascent/descent
The race maps for the latter two races are at the back of this information sheet, and can be viewed online at:
Under 13 Under 15 Race
Under 17 Under 20 Race
The races will be marked and marshalled, and follow hill paths apart from a short grassy section at the top of the descent in the Under 17/20 race. The paths can get muddy in sections after rain so studded footwear is recommended.
Race Entry
The Under 17/20 race and Under 13/15 race are pre-entry only (no entry on the day) via SI Entries:
SiEntries - Events List
Entries open in late March (event entries not online yet as of 21/03/2024) and close at 10pm on Wednesday 8th May 2024. The race entry fee is £6 (£8 if not a member of scottishathletics).
The Junior Fun Run is entry on the day only (by 11.45am) and costs £2 to enter.
Travel/Parking/Registration/Facilities
Unfortunately, Broughton is not easy to access by public transport (the nearest regular bus services pass through Biggar and Peebles) so please share transport as much as possible.
IMPORTANT – If travelling from/via the Edinburgh area, note the Penicuik 10k takes place at 11am and uses the A701/A6094, so the best way to travel to Broughton is via the A702 to either West Linton or Dolphinton, then cut across to the A701.
Parking will be on the verge of the drive above and below Broughton Place Farm (ML12 6HJ). Please park as directed by the parking marshals (from 10.15am). Note, please do not use the hill walker’s car park which has limited spaces, required for public use/key race officials.
Registration (from 10.30am) will be in a gazebo next to the start, just beyond the hill walker’s car park, a maximum of 1km from the parking.
There will be no changing facilities or toilets at the race start. The nearest public toilets are in Broughton village, see the link below:
Broughton King George VI Park - Public toilets | Scottish Borders Council (scotborders.gov.uk)
The start area is quite exposed if the weather is bad, so please bring appropriate clothing to keep warm/dry. There is a grassy area next to the start where small tents/gazebos can be pitched. We won’t be providing water etc., so please bring plenty water/refreshments (especially if it’s a hot day!). Please leave the area tidy afterwards and take all rubbish home with you.
Race numbers will be provided but please bring your own pins.
Safety
The race is permitted by Scottishathletics and will be run under the UKA Rules for Fell/Hill Running. In Scotland, Scottishathletics permitted events follow the SHR safety rules and guidelines which can be viewed here:
SHR Safety Rules
All athletes in the Junior Races and Fun Run must bring waterproof long sleeve top and bottoms, hat and gloves, and must be prepared to carry them if the organizer specifies they must do so. Failure to comply with any minimum kit rule will result in disqualification.
Any athlete who retires from the race must report their retiral to the start/finish and/or registration teams.
We will have a first aid trained helper in attendance and a first aid kit. The nearest A&E departments are all approximately a 50min drive away, at Edinburgh Infirmary, Wishaw General and St John’s Hospital in Livingston.
International Youth Cup Selection Race/Junior League
