Scottish athletes had some excellent results at the recent World Masters Mountain Running Championships held on the island of Madeira. This year, for the first time, there were two separate races. An uphill race of 9.2km with 800m climb and a long distance trail race of 32km and 1161m ascent and 1164m descent.
Three Scots became World Champions at the event, all on the uphill race and like all World Champs now, they were running for GB. Colin Donnelly won the Over 60 men category; Hilary Spenceley the Over 65 women and Paul Faulkner the Over 50 men. Hilary also led the GB Over 65 team to victory, so earned two gold medals. Other Scots running were Sue Ridley, 6th in Over 55 women and Stewart Whitlie, 7th in Over 60 men. Stewart and Colin also helped the GB Over 60 team to silver medals.
In the long distance race, Andy Fallas was 3rd Over 40, Paul Faulkner 3rd Over 50, Sue Ridley 4th Over 55 and Helen Fallas 2nd Over 35.
